Interview with Marek Spanel about Resistance

Number of new interviews is increasing... :-) Today there is another article on Czech game server Doupe.cz, this time with big boss of BIS, Marek Spanel. Much information is already known but they have new nice screenshots:

Doupe: Flashpoint becomes in fact an iconic game. They sold incredible number of copies, won many prestige awards. What award do you value at most?

Marek Spanel: Big award was title „Game of the Year“ from American magazine Computer Gaming World. I really didn't expect this, they dispense this award already 15 years and before OFP games like SimCity, Civilization, Doom, Diablo or Half-Life won this prize. I also very respect recognition as new developing studio of year at Game Developers Choice awards on recent conference of gaming developers in San José because this prize is dispense by gaming developers themselves.

M.S.: ... this is not the same conflict; it's totally another war in which Americans are not directly interested, so overall sound is fairly different.

Doupe: Will it be the last data disc for Flashpoint or do you prepare next one?

M.S.: Probably it'll be last classic data disc because we want dedicate our time to next games. Regardless there are certain possibilities mainly thanks to military simulator VBS1 derived from Flashpoint, thanks to that we could offer OFP players something big yet. We'll see but now our priority is Resistance.

Doupe: You are promise new vehicles, could you adduce some examples?

M.S.: Motorcycle and bus.

Doupe: New weapons also sound auspiciously. What are they?

M.S.: If it will succeed, it will be especially one totally new type of weapon that really missed in game until now.

Interview with Viktor Bocan about Resistance

During last months several new interviews about prepared project OFP: Resistance were published on the net. Most of obvious questions have already been asked. So we decided to ask BIS, specifically Viktor Bocan, lead designer of Resistance, for answers to a little bit another questions. If you don't know what about OFP: Resistance is, you should read older interviews, for example the one from HomeLAN two days old, or you can visit official OFP: Resistance pages at Bohemia Interactive Studio.

Here is translate from Czech of our new interview:

Maggo/ofp.info: Due to new screenshots we had chance to see, OFP: Resistance will have much better graphic. How the hardware requirement will increase contrary to last year retail version?

V. B.: If you would like to savour new graphics from data disc all in all, you will need of course some stronger PC than for original game; nevertheless, some 700 MHz and 256 MB RAM with good graphic card (for example GeForce) should be enough for comfortable playing. But it's the same as in original game: you can play also on poorer machines (at the cost of poorer graphics) but program has many to offer to highest PC too.

Maggo/ofp.info: We read somewhere about industrial orientation of new island (industrial development or something like this). So do you prepare some large complex of buildings, factory etc., where MP battles could be placed?

V. B.: There are several places on new island, which we designed especially for multiplayer. Moreover this island is much bigger and more various that older ones, so also missions in "free nature" will get new panache.

Maggo/ofp.info: What about AI? Will their activity and using of buildings improve? Also in higher stages?

V. B.: Like everything other also AI will be better on data disc than in original game but OFP is still mainly exterior game and AI is optimised just for exteriors. So answer sounds: No.

Maggo/ofp.info: Do you prepare some changes with water streams? Can we expect any river or brook?

V. B.: Let be suprised. :-) Engine still don't have any special support for water streams for the present but we tried to bypass it a little bit.

Maggo/ofp.info: We read on forum that you made decision in minimally 80 cases about giving SDK to fans. Could we ask if somebody really received SDK or when you will send it?

V. B.: Our program for support for amateur MOD makers is slowly getting start so you will soon note some concrete results. It's long time initiative which goal is to make freely accessible content for this game as quality as possible.

Maggo/ofp.info: Do you know approximate price of Resistance perhaps relative to price of original retail game OFP?

V. B.: Resistance is data disc and if you want to use it, you need own the original game. From this we can brew up price, which is of course far lower than price of full game. It should cost 19 GBP or 29 USD.

Bojler/ofp.info: What language mutation do you prepare for Resistance?

V. B.: Resistance will be sold probably in the same language mutation as original OFP. So it means English, German, Spanish, Italian and French plus some special version - surely Czech, almost surely also Polish, Russian and Korean.

Bojler/ofp.info: Resistance is your last project for OFP or you have more plans about it? ... OFP 2?

V. B.: I thing it's quite early for this question. But even if we would leave Flashpoint, I'm sure that it will live its own life... This is not meaning that we really prepare to totally leave it. Enormous popularity of our game is also certain obligation for us, besides we are still glad to play this game.

Bojler/ofp.info: If Resistance is your last project, does it mean that after it you give MOD making tools to public?

V. B.: We are sure that finally all developing tools will freely come to public naturally it will spend some time yet. How long it's hard to say now.

Bojler/ofp.info: What project will come after it?

V. B.: I'd say again that it's too early for this question. I can, however, reveal that real environments and large worlds still tempt us.

Bojler/ofp.info: In chaos around Resistance and developing tools we forget on Independence Lost. Can you tell us something about this project?

V. B.: No. :)

Dusand/ofp.info: Do you prepare any radical "revolutionary" function for players in Resistance? For example firing from car etc.

V. B.: We should perceive that even if Resistance is only data disc, it brings innovations enough and to spare. We are simply not able to be satisfied with giving players only new island or new campaign. Apart from little refinements we prepare also several "revolutionary" functions - what it will be I can't reveal yet.

Bojler/ofp.info: Release of Resistance is announced to 21st July. Will you release a demo before this date? Or at least trailer?

V. B.: Trailer will be released surely. We plan also some demo but before finishing Resistance itself we can't do that so I'm not sure if it will come out before release of data disc. Moreover it's not entirely new product so demo will not be attractive for most people.

I am part of Phantom's Bravo Two Zero Campaign. As the name suggests, it's based on Andy McNab's best-selling novel, which recounts his time in Iraq as leader of an SAS patrol when their mission went horribly wrong. We hope to bring his story to life again in OFP, and we have great hopes for our campaign, as we have some great people working on it.
But we need more! Whatever your ability and speciality, i'm sure you'll be useful. We have a website which, although still under construction, is taking shape fast.
